Aviation as a passion and opportunity

Aviation as a Passion and Opportunity

The value of a company is its employees

Every year our pilots and hoist operators must conduct several trainings and examinations; not only to remain current (keep their pilot / hoist operator license), but also to learn new things, acquire new skills, and gain new perspectives. These trainings are conducted in the simulator, on the actual aircraft, as well as in ground-based courses and theory lessons. The training we provide to our pilots and hoist operators vary from:
  • The regular simulator training and checking
  • Hoist trainings and checking (onshore and offshore)
  • Crew Resource Management (CRM) trainings
  • Hoist operator and dispatcher training
  • Command upgrades
  • Hoist Operator Instructor & Examiner training
  • … and many more
At HeliService we conduct most of our practical courses and training inhouse, we do that for various reasons.
  • Absolute control over the course content and thus having the training tailored to the offshore operations.
  • Flexibility in the planning.
  • Control over the quality of the course and the quality of the examination/
  • Developing our very own training personnel – and with that providing our colleagues a broader career spectrum/
  • Teaching a subject and applying a subject at the same time, improves the quality of our operation as the trainer gains the perspective from both angles/
By allowing our pilots to become:
  • CRM (Crew Resource Management) Trainers
  • Simulator and real aircraft Instructors/Examiners
  • Hoist Operator Instructor/Examiners etc.
We are raising the skill level within our group of pilots and hoist operators.
HeliService is using level “D” full flight simulators. The reason is simple, we can create a real mission scenario in the simulator and fail systems, we couldn`t in the real helicopter. For example, an engine fire and or complex electrical problems, including smoke in the cockpit. Therefor the training scenario is much more complex and demanding, the quality of the training is better and safer. On top, we are reducing emissions by using a simulator. For our simulator instructing and checking we have a cooperations with independent helicopter simulator providers. Together with their Graphic Engineers we have replicated the very environment our pilots fly in, i.e. the geographical area with the actual windfarms and platforms we fly in, in our daily operations. That allows us to train in the very same environment with the same visual cues as our pilots encounter in real life. On top of that we have replicated turbines in different hoist positions to allow training for this most crucial part of our operation as well.
Focus during training and checking is the knowledge about our Operation Manuals and Standard Operating procedures, as well as System knowledge.
  • Do the pilots understand our procedures?
  • Do they use our callouts and work together according to our Multi Crew Concept?
  • Is the situational awareness present to manage the complex scenario together and not lose focus on the safe mission?
  • Are basic manual flight skills available?
  • Can they fly all manoeuvres manually and use automation properly?
Upgrade to Commander Training, Simulator Part The simulator training consists of multiple days of theory with the new responsibilities as commanders and the different aspects in terms of CRM as commander. Afterwards we will train the commander and check him/her in the simulator one more time, with a focus on decision making, leadership and safety.

Development Time

Our training varies in duration depending on the development need for the pilot or hoist operator.
The simulator training typically consists of 1 to 2 days of training. The training days consist of one day of theory, multiple training slots of 2 hours each with briefing and debriefing by the instructor. The training is followed by an examination flight which lasts 2 hours.

A Safety Management System is a systematic approach to managing safety. The objective is to control (flight) operational risks which requires planning, organising, communicating, and providing directions.”

How We Develop Pilots

From Copilot to Captains

At HeliService we hire Co-pilots from various backgrounds; directly out of flight school, with prior offshore experience, from other helicopter operations, as well as or pilots which join us from the military.

All new pilots go through the Operator Conversion Course (OCC), which consists of all the required ground-based courses, such as:

  • CRM
  • Aviation Security
  • Fire Fighting
  • First Aid
  • Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET)
  • SMS
  • Theory training about our company
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Company philosophy and much more

Once these have been completed and the pilot has gained a thorough understanding of HeliService’s standard we take the pilot to the simulator and explore the practical part. There pilots receive training in our offshore working environment and the corresponding SOPs (Standard OperatingProcedures) The amount of training a pilot receives depends on their very background and experience. Once the pilot has reached the desired level of knowledge and skills, we conduct an Operational Proficiency Check (OPC).

Once the pilot has passed the OPC, the pilot is now ready for the line training. We conduct the the line training, during an actual commercial line flight, accompanied by a Line Training Captain (LTC)). The LTC will flies together with the new pilot until he/she has gained enough experience and exposure to be checked out once again to allow him or her to fly with all the other captains of HeliService.
During their career as a Co-pilot at HeliService, the pilot will gain experience throughout the years of flying in the North Sea, learning from other crew members, and continuous recurrent training.
Once our pilots have gained enough experience and have reached the minimum amount of flight hours required to qualify for the consideration to be trained as a captain and having continuously shown that they possess what it takes to become a captain; we can start their upgrade to command training.

Safety Is What It Is All About

Safety stands above everything

It is the prerequisite to always ensure for of any person working at HeliService; from top to bottom and bottom to top. Our pilots and hoist operators are trained not only on our SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) to always choose the safe option, but also by our company culture. Our management in Flight Operations & Crew Training propagate Safety and Just Culture to all crew members on a daily basis.
Focus is put on Safety during every training we do; from CRM to HUET (Helicopter Under Water Escape Training) to Simulator and Line Training & Checking. Safety is not only a commitment to our customers but also to our families and loved ones at home.
