On 11 November 2018, our two Airbus Helicopter BK117 C1 aircraft left Emden on their latest adventure. As the dedicated aviation assets embarked on the RV Polarstern, a research icebreaker vessel, the two helicopters provide a means of transportation, emergency contingency and an airborne platform from which to view the scenery. The RV Polarstern is currently en route to the Antarctic, carrying experts from the Alfred Wegener Institute, for a period of scientific experimentation and observation over the Southern Hemisphere summer before returning to the Northern Hemisphere in June 2019. We are very proud to have supported this important environmental research since 2014 and wish the experts on board the best of luck for this latest expedition.
Back at Emden, the addition of two further BK117 helicopters is giving us the opportunity to develop a night capability in support of Winter research, with the MOSAiC expedition in September 2019 the first planned to benefit from this new capability. This expedition involves the vessel drifting in the Arctic Ocean for a year, trapped in the ice. There are going to be some long Winter nights up there! Good luck!
